Spotlight on Alumni - Kate Wilson '02

Alumni Spotlight: Kate Wilson (Class of 2002). From Fashion to Skin Health – A Career Reinvention

After completing a Diploma of Fashion Design, Kate Wilson (Class of 2002) embarked on an exciting career in the fashion industry, working in both wholesale and retail buying. Her work took her from Melbourne to Sydney, where she worked for one of Australia’s largest department stores, before returning to Melbourne to join a leading Australian women’s fashion brand.

While she thrived in the creativity and fast-paced nature of the fashion world, Kate discovered a new passion—skin health and science. The pandemic provided a moment of reflection, leading her to take a bold step in a new direction. She enrolled in a Bachelor of Dermal Sciences at Victoria University, balancing full-time study, part-time work, and family life.

Today, she is a Dermal Clinician at Bare Laser and Skin, helping clients achieve their skin health goals through advanced corrective treatments.

Career Lessons & Insights

For Kate, the biggest lesson has been the power of continuous learning and embracing change.

“Careers don’t have to follow a straight path—it’s okay to reassess, pivot, and take steps toward what truly excites you. My journey from fashion to dermal sciences reinforced that growth happens when you step out of your comfort zone and commit to learning, even when it’s difficult.”

With this mindset, Kate approaches her career as an opportunity to refine her expertise and provide the best possible carefor her clients.

Life Beyond Work

Now settled bayside with her husband Tom and their two children, Olivia (8) and Leo (6), Kate hopes to inspire her children and others to believe that hard work pays off and that it’s never too late to follow your gut, try something new, and evolve personally and professionally.

We celebrate Kate’s incredible journey and wish her continued success in her evolving career!
